FG scraps post UTME as JAMB pegs cutoff mark at 180
Speaking at the opening of the 2016 Combined Policy Meeting on Admissions to Universities, Polytechnics and other higher institutions in Nigeria, Adamu said the Federal government had confidence in the examination conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), adding that there was no need for other examination to be conducted by universities after JAMB.
âAs far as I am concerned, the nation has confidence in what JAMB is doing. The universities should not be holding another examination and if the universities have any complain against JAMB let them bring it and then we address it. If JAMB is qualified enough to conduct tests and they have conducted test then there will be no need to conduct another test for students to gain admissionâhe said
Meanwhile JAMB authorities has put the cutoff mark for admission into all Tertiary institutions at 180. Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of JAMB, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, announced this today at the event.
â180 is given, no institution will go below 180 this year, And some universities can go above it, I know University of Ife will not go below 200 and University of Lagos will not go below 200 and also UI. All these ones stand but 180 as bench mark for others. This year we have more than enough candidates, we have over 1.5 million candidates so we will get enough candidates to take in all the schools if they are serious. Re-distribution is already ongoing, because it is embedded in the registration procedure.âhe said

3 children stabbed to death by their mother
According to AP reports, the mother, who hasn't been identified yet tried to kill herself, after she fatally stabbed her 2-month-old, 5-year-old and 8-year-old children.
Sgt. Trent Crump says the woman's brother called 911 after he got home late Wednesday night and found that he had been locked out of the house.
Crump said the brother eventually got into the home and found his sister with self-inflicted stab wounds.
He ran to get towels to stop her bleeding but found her in a bathtub trying to drown herself.
Police said the woman told officers who arrived at the scene that her children were somewhere safe. But police then found the boys, all dead from stab wounds, with least two of the bodies hidden in a closet.

Seven-year-old boy left in Japan forest by his parents found alive after almost a week
The little boy was found in a building on a Japanese military base about 2.5 miles from where his father left him last Saturday.
His parents left him by the side of a road to punish him for throwing stones at cars but he went missing and they couldn't find him when they returned to pick him up..
His disappearance sparked a massive hunt involving over 130 police and school officials descending on Hokkaido, Japan's largest northern island.
"One of our soldiers was preparing for drills this morning and opened the door of a building on the base, and there he was," a member of Japan's Self-Defence Forces
"When he asked 'are you Yamato?' the boy said yes. Then he said he was hungry, so the soldier gave him some water, bread and riceballs."

The boy's father |
Yamato was taken to hospital for a check up and apart from having a low body temperature, he is healthy and would be kept overnight as a precaution, a doctor said in a news conference.
The boy's tearful dad Takayuki Tanooka thanked rescuers for their efforts and apologised for causing trouble.
He said:
"We've reflected on what we did and it was really excessive.
"We - well, we loved him before, but I hope to give him even more attention now."The Island is home to the deadly Ussuri brown bear , which can grow to a massive 550kg - almost 90 stone.
The boy fortunately managed to survive for nearly a week in the densely forested area, where night temperatures fell as low as 7 degrees and heavy rain had fallen, despite wearing only a t-shirt and jeans.
His father said when they left him there as punishment, they almsot immediately returned to the exact place they had left him but couldn't find him. And because he was too embarrassed to admit to what he did to his son, he initially told people that the boy had gotten lost while they were all on a walk but later admitted his mistake and went to the police to request a search on Saturday.
Brown bears have a history of killing humans - with more than 140 people killed in the first 57 years of the 20th century.

Dying Nigerian man's desperate plea for donor brother to be allowed into UK to save his life
A Nigerian caretaker at one of Londonâs top public schools has launched a
desperate appeal to the Home Office to allow his brother to visit the UK
from Nigeria for a life-saving bone-marrow transplant.
Isaac Aganozor, who works at Dulwich College, was diagnosed with leukaemia in August and needs an urgent stem cell transplant from his brother Patrick, who lives with his family in Nigeria.
Patrick, a tricycle courier who earns ÂŁ2.30 a day, was refused a visa
to enter the UK as he did not meet economic requirements. This was
despite the ÂŁ36,000-a-year school offering to sponsor his month-long
âmercy missionâ and pay ÂŁ1,500 for his return flight.
His brother Isaac, 44, who lives in Sydenham Hill, is being given
regular high-dose chemotherapy sessions at St Bartholomewâs hospital
but has been told that âtime is running outâ.
A search of the national donor database revealed that Patrick, 38, is
a 50 per cent match for his brother, and the only realistic hope of his
receiving the stem cells in time. Despite a letter from hospital
specialists detailing Patrickâs status as the âonly available matching
donor for the urgent stem cell transplantâ, he was refused a visa in
April.
A rejection letter from the British High Commission in Lagos, seen by
the Standard, reads:
"You have stated your brother has acute myeloid
leukaemia and you are to be a stem cell donor. I must take into account
your personal socio-economic circumstances in Nigeria when reaching my
decision. I note that you are a tricycle driver earning ÂŁ69 a month in
Nigeria but you state you have ÂŁ1,500 for this trip. Given your limited economic circumstances in Nigeria I am not
satisfied that these provide you with an incentive to leave the UK at
the end of your stay as claimed.â Mr Aganozor, who has been off sick
from work since December, said there is no danger that his brother will
try to stay in the UK after the transplant as he has to care for his
four-year-old daughter and ailing mother in Lagos.
He said: "I was so happy when I found out that my brother was a
match. But when his application was rejected it was a bigger shock than
getting told I had leukaemia in the first place. The immigration
officers didnât consider my health, only economics. It is incredibly
frustrating to know that the solution that could save my life is only
six hours away by plane. I feel the sickness inside me, I donât know
what to do. My life is gradually slipping away."
Simon Yiend, chief operating officer at Dulwich College, where Mr
Aganozor has worked since April last year, said:
"Isaac
is a quietly
spoken, hard-working man who gets on with his job incredibly well. Iâm
appalled by the Home Officeâs decision. It is essentially because
Patrick is a poor man that he canât come
across to do the only thing he wants to do â save his brotherâs life. I
understand the concerns around immigration and people who want to
take advantage of our system, but Patrick wants to go back to his family
in Nigeria straight after the operation. Nigeria was part of the
Commonwealth yet we donât allow an
individual in on humanitarian grounds for a mercy mission â it is
disgusting."
Helen Hayes, the Labour MP for Dulwich and West Norwood, has held
discussions with immigration minister James Brokenshire. But she was
told a priority appeal for a new visa is necessary, which will require
the involvement of specialist immigration lawyers.
"Iâm appalled that the Home Office is showing so little flexibility and compassion.
I am doing everything possible to press the Home Office to consider
the new application as a matter of urgency, so that Patrick can travel
before Isaacâs health deteriorates further."
The Home Office confirmed: "All cases are carefully considered on
their individual merits and the onus is on the individual to provide the
necessary supporting evidence to meet the UK immigration rules. We are
sensitive to cases with compassionate circumstances but all visa
applications must be assessed against the immigration rules. The
applicant is free to submit a new application with supporting evidence."
